As part of the SI 622 Evaluation of Systems & Services course, my group chose to conduct UX Research for Ubi, a web-based television streaming start-up in beta.

Since this was our first introduction to Ubi, we wanted to experience it like a regular user. We went through the sign up process and explored as much as we could. We created an interaction map using Omnigraffle so we could view Ubi in its entirety. The interaction map showed missing or problematic architecture areas in the navigation schema:

The group then conducted a comparative analysis of similar services, such as Hulu and YouTube. We chose a variety of competitors, including those that did not directly compete but could potentially provide ideas for additional functionality or improvement.

The team then interviewed the current beta users we could find (there weren’t many consistent users to choose from). We created personas and scenarios from the interviews for the developers to keep in mind as they continued to work on and design the product.

We then individually conducted heuristic evaluations using Nielsen's heuristics, and brought the results together in one matrix. To validate these issues, we also conducted usability testing with potential Ubi users. The usability testing solidified our findings of numerous issues with the interactions, navigation, and jargon used.

We presented a complete report and set of recommendations to Ubi, and they seemed open to implementing our suggestions. They specifically wanted a visual artifact to help them incorporate the findings. Thus, we presented our final report with a Photoshop mockup I created to make it easier for them to visualize our findings and recommendations:
